Richmond, Virginia
A group of cultural executives in the Richmond, Virginia region met with leaders in the corporate sector and government to propose a cultural planning initiative. The group assembled a Task Force that included representatives of private and public sector funders and a diverse mix of cultural organizations from Richmond as well as Chesterfield, Hanover, and Henrico counties. WolfBrown was hired to lead the regional community cultural planning process, which included extensive research – a cultural census involving almost 3,000 residents, an economic activity analysis, a cultural budget, and an inventory of cultural education programs. It also involved a considerable public process consisting of community convenings of 250 residents as well as interviews and small group meetings with over one hundred additional civic, community, corporate, and cultural leaders, artists, and others. The result was a Call to Action that has been widely embraced, a comprehensive plan that will serve as a blueprint for the next five years, and a research report on the state of arts, culture, history, and heritage in the region.
