Bellevue, Washington
Bellevue, Washington is across the lake from Seattle and has grown in its fifty years to be a hub of commercial activity for East King County. City Council wanted Bellevue to become the cultural hub of the Eastside and commissioned a community-wide cultural planning initiative, called “Cultural Compass: A Strategic Vision for Arts and Culture in Bellevue.” WolfBrown consultants worked with a 31-member Steering Committee, held a day-long forum with panel discussions and break-out sessions with over 75 attendees, and conducted a full range of cultural assessments and research.
The plan established four core initiatives that addressed cultural participation, diverse cultural districts, strengthened cultural organizations and artists, and an engaged and effective cultural leadership. The initiatives were grounded in a series of goals, each of which had strategies to address in detail the specifics of the vision. After over a year of work with active and engaged Steering and Executive Committees, as well as City staff, Bellevue’s City Council adopted Cultural Compass in September 2004 and the Bellevue Arts Commission has focused on initial implementation.
