David and Lucile Packard Foundation
WolfBrown consultants first became involved with the David & Lucile Packard Foundation in the mid-1990s when Foundation Arts staff requested assistance in the development of a planning document to present to the Foundation’s board on the future direction of arts grantmaking. Subsequently, the Foundation sought the consultants’ help in analyzing the root causes of the demise of the San Jose Symphony and making recommendations for the future. The consultants carried out an in-depth analysis and led a working group locally to consider alternative models for symphonic music presentation. This work resulted in a book, And the Band Stopped Playing, by Dr. Thomas Wolf and Packard’s Arts Program Director, Nancy Glaze, published in 2005 and favorably reviewed by the Wall Street Journal. Later that year, WolfBrown consultants carried out a comprehensive evaluation of Packard’s arts grantmaking, which included in-depth field work and a comparative analysis of foundation grants programs nationwide.
