In 2016 the Monterey Jazz Festival commissioned WolfBrown to write a literature review about the socioemotional benefits of jazz instruction and to gauge the feasibility of undertaking a study of those benefits among the diverse communities served by the Festival’s educational programming. The literature review also addressed the factors, both contextual and intrapersonal, that influence whether students persist in their study of music. This question not only determines which students have the opportunity to realize the benefits of sustained music education, but is also directly relevant to the diversity of the fields of jazz and classical music.
